I am passing on this comment from Frank

“Well done to Catherine, Ed, Jo, John, Rob, who all competed in competitions this weekend.

For those doing their first competitions this was a baptism by fire as they found that many of the national fencing squad were at the Hampshire Open. However, they enjoyed themselves and I am sure that they learnt lots. Our fencers all worked hard and I noted that some rather too serious sabre fencers were highly embarrassed to lose points (and even bouts) to our novices! Even those who have done several competitions were seriously challenged, Jo Speers eventually going out in the direct elimination (DE) stage to Nikki Barlow, who is in the national squad and currently ranked number 6 in the UK.

This is the first time that the club has managed a clean sweep with fencers competing in all three weapons and I hope that others will be encouraged by to enter competitions. They are fun!
I gather that Dom took a lot of photos which I hope will be posted on our website soon.

Congratulations again to all

Frank”

I concur, I was extremely proud of Rob, Catherine and Jo’s performances and their sportsmanlike attitudes on the piste. Thanks to the organizers Jenny and Carl Morris (Seacourt) for putting up a friendly but challenging open. I thoroughly enjoyed the day. I did a trawl round for photos (see here). Results here.

Final score – CCFC 151 : 139 University of Portsmouth

A very well attended session on Thursday 10th December saw a victory for CCFC against the visiting team from the University of Portsmouth. Matches took place across all three weapons and in various formats, with the total score of all the matches added together to give CCFC a win by 12 points.

Well done to all our fencers who took part in the team matches…

Foil – Richard, Sam & Ben
Epee – Ed, Dave & Morys
Steam Foil – Angela, Jo & Francois
Steam Foil – Ben, Joe & Alex

… and to everyone else who came along and took part.

A special thanks also to the teams from the University of Portsmouth who came all the way down to fence us. We hope that in the New Year we can make this a regular feature, perhaps even with a trophy going between the two clubs.

Sussex County Novice Foil 2009 – Sun 25th Oct womens individual foil

Well done to Jo Speer for coming 3rd in her first competition !! Undaunted, she faced her opponents with aplomb and heartily gave a real sportsmanship first handshake whether she won or not, our model fencer and a credit to the club. Mum sent text updates through the airwaves to an ailing father with probable man flu (or more?).

Huge cheer for Hollie Lewis, a new member of our club (recently of Sharon Blackman’s Chichester Fencing Club), who came 1st !! Her composure was a pleasure to watch as she readily dispatched her various foes watched by a very proud family. The results, alongside her amazing grin as she left the piste, were worthwhile seeing (well done Maestro Pulaczewski).
