School's Development Scheme

The aim of the Schools Development Scheme (SDS) is to establish the sport of fencing as an extra-curricular activity within every state school in the Chichester area, at no cost to pupils or to the schools involved. The project has been set up by Chichester Community Fencing Club (CCFC) and has only been made possible due to the great financial generosity of the trustees of The Woodger Trust, to whom CCFC all those participating are indebted. The CCFC SDS is also supported by the country’s leading fencing equipment suppliers, Leon Paul. In addition, the scheme has had the valuable advice and guidance of Norman Randall of England Fencing and Professor of fencing, Jes Smith.  One principal reason why CCFC was formed was to widen participation in fencing, especially within state schools, as prior to the club's creation little effort was given to achieving this aim in our local community - with fencing mainly being practiced in private schools. The CCFC SDS offers every participating state primary school the opportunity to benefit from free use of fencing kit for up to 16 children per session. The equipment provided is from the Leon Paul Mini Fencing® range, a new innovation in fencing using non-metal weapons, and is loaned by the scheme to each school at no cost to the school. This project is all about improving access to sport and the quality of life of children. It’s about providing something to children at no cost to their family that they can enjoy and apply themselves to, providing something that state school children don’t normally have access to. But it’s also about developing the skills of educational staff and giving them the chance to create something they’re proud to be a part of and proud to be able to offer to children. If you or your school would be interesting in joining the scheme, or if you would like further information, don't hesitate to contact us.

As from the 14th April 2011 South Coast Sports (SCS) have joined in partnership with the CCFC to help deliver the SDS programme (see

Chichester Gold Mini Games 2010

The Mini World Cup programme was established to harness the enthusiasm generated by major sporting events and use this as an engagement mechanism to work on a number of issues with young people. Officers from the Sport and Leisure and Communities Teams initiated this project in 2006 in line with the Football World Cup being staged in Germany. After the success of the Chichester District Football, Rugby, and Cricket Mini World Cup Programmes, London 2012 provided a perfect opportunity to inspire a new generation of young people to participate in sport. To this end local primary schools were invited to take part in the new Chichester Gold Mini Games. This programme involves Year 5 pupils and as well as encouraging them to take part in different sports activities, also address the following themes: awareness of other cultures, respect and bullying, healthy living, and sportsmanship. The latter element of the programme was led by the Sportsmanship First Group. The mandate of this group is to educate children on the benefits of encouragement, doing ones best and praise, and how the simple act of a handshake can signal a mutual understanding that the competitors will play hard but fair and understand that Sportsmanship will come First.

Steve,Lee, Frank,Dave Stewart and Jo all participated in the local Chichester Gold Mini Games 2010. Birdham CE Primary School, Central CE Junior School, Chidham Parochial Primary, East Wittering Primary School School, Edward Bryant Primary took part in these mini-olympic games competing in sports including fencing (as mini-fence) hosted by the University of Chichester.  It was a lovely sunny day and we had the pleasure of having Elizabeth Ng (Junior Commonwealth Fencing Champion 2009) and her mother Jasmine to help and present the Woodger Trust Cup.
