Mini-Fence® Programme

PRIMARY LINK TEACHERS’ / SCHOOL SPORTS CO-ORDINATORS’ WORKSHOP

Introduction -

Mini-Fence® is a fun and extremely safe system for introducing the exciting sport of fencing to children at KS1 and 2, eg Years 5/6. It captures the imagination and holds the attention and is at once both physical and mental exercise. Suitable for girls and boys, it requires no complicated equipment, just a face-mask and a foam foil.

The MINI-FENCE® Workshop -

Because Mini-Fence® does not require a qualified fencing coach (it comes fully supported with pre-prepared lesson plans, handouts, posters and a DVD) PLTs and others can be given all the necessary skills, knowledge and behaviours to confidently lead Mini-Fence® sessions, in a stand-alone three-hour workshop. Also, the workshop can form an element of a longer CPD event. A certificate of attendance can be issued for CPD purposes.

Aim -

The aim of the England Fencing Mini-Fence® Workshop is to familiarize participants with the Mini-Fence® system and materials.

Outcomes -

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

• Recognise the modern Olympic fencing weapons
• Use some fencing terminology
• Demonstrate a range of fencing moves and actions with Mini-Fence® equipment
• Explore ways to develop Mini-Fence® in their school

Indicative Programme -

• Introductions, aims and outcomes
• The modern Olympic sport of fencing, the three weapons
• Health and Safety Considerations
• Warming-up and fencing related exercises and games
• The ‘on guard’ stance and steps
• Simple Attacks

They’ll do exercises and play games as well as develop their own possible exercises with the equipment, the emphasis being on generic agility, balance and co-ordination as well as specific fencing skills.
